Reason For Usher Album Delay?

From the Daily News:

Hey, Usher, better late than never! We hear the crooner has had his latest CD, which was supposed to be released Sunday, pushed back until March 30. Why the delay? A source at the “Confessions” singer’s record company says Jive Records refused to put Usher’s album out until he signs with a new management firm. Apparently the crooner and his mother — and former manager– Jonetta Patton are officially on the outs and severed their professional ties in late November 2009.
“She walked away from the project because Usher had his girlfriend [and former Def Jam executive] Grace Miguel was all in the mix,” says the source.

“She felt as though if she didn’t end things when she did, it would permanently affect their personal relationship,” continues the source. Usher had apparently declared that he would manage himself, with the help of Miguel, but the label felt that “there was chaos in the camp.” Jive has released three singles in an attempt to launch the CD “Raymond vs. Raymond.” The first single, “Papers,” which was released last September, only reached No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100, so the label began working two more new singles, “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” and “More.” But there may be hope for the singer yet: It appears Usher is close to signing an agreement with AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips, manager for Lionel Richie, Toni Braxton and the late Michael Jackson. In fact, Usher was spotted sitting at Phillip’s table at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy bash. Just as Usher’s career may be looking up, it appears his love life is, too. Our source says that despite Usher’s attempts to downplay his romantic involvement with Miguel, the former Def Jam exec also was by Usher’s side during Grammy weekend in L.A. The two were spotted “holding hands,” and Usher was seen “gently caressing her back” when he thought no one was looking at L.A. Reid’s post-Grammy party at the L.A. restaurant Cecconi’s.

Usher Performs “Daddy’s Home” On MTV’s Upfront

This video comes from MTV Behind the Screen, the network’s presentation to advertisers at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom last week. It was the opening pitch of the basic cable Upfront season but one not overtly positioned as an Upfront event. Rather, the very early timing (February 2) came across as an important acknowledgement that television is a 52-week-a-year business in all ways.

MTV decided to let its talent tell its story, a smart move considering the dizzying diversity of its current and upcoming programs. This approach seemed to play very well with the crowd of noticeably young media buyers and planners that filled the room, along with some of the industry’s senior-most media agency executives. Usher opened the show with several songs, his performance enhanced by four provocative female dancers. Quest Crew, the winning group from Season 3 of America’s Best Dance Crew, brought the house down at the end. In between, it was all talent and series creators talking about their shows, with minimal hosting chores handled by MTV News personality Sway. The energy throughout was palpable.

The messages put forth about individual shows and the network overall were consistently clear and concise. They all reinforced the fact that, despite formidable competition from the usual online suspects, MTV is still a driving force in popular culture as it relates to young people, and it is still second to none at reflecting all aspects of current youth culture.

It was interesting to hear Usher at the opening of the event and Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy at its mid-point wax nostalgic about watching MTV when they were young. Their hindsight enthusiasm was all about the music and artists they saw on the network that entertained and inspired them, rather than unscripted series programming of the kind that largely defines MTV today. Usher recalled the thrill he felt when he saw his first video “on the same channel” he had seen Michael Jackson’s Thriller on many years earlier.

Official “Raymond vs. Raymond” Press Release

Album Reveals Different Sides Of The Multi-Faceted Singer

Usher Raymond IV’s highly anticipated sixth studio album, Raymond v. Raymond will be released on March 30th.

Raymond v. Raymond comes as the five-time Grammy winner currently has, or is featured in four chart-topping songs on U.S. urban charts: “Papers” which rapidly climbed to #1 on the urban adult airplay chart last year, remains a Top 5 and 15 staple on both adult R&B and urban mainstream charts respectively; “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” featuring Plies claims the No. 19 spot on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart; “There Goes My Baby” ranks No. 16 on the urban adult contemporary airplay chart; and Raymond’s collaboration with Gucci Mane, “Spotlight,” is in the Top 15 on the Hot Rap Songs chart.

Raymond v. Raymond finds the iconic singer addressing various topics reflecting the dichotomies of life. It is described as a natural follow-up to Usher’s ground-breaking 2004 Confessions album which earned him the distinction of being the “Top Hot 100 Artist of the Decade” with 13 consecutive top 20 singles (seven reaching No. 1 and collectively spending the most weeks atop the chart for any act in the decade) according to Billboard magazine. The new album contains the smoldering signature ballads and hypnotic up-tempos the multi-talented, all around entertainer is known for.

Leading up to the release Usher will appear in a number of high profile performances kicking off with the 2010 Grammy’s on January 31st (CBS); followed by a half-time performance on the NBA All-Star Game on February 14th (TNT); and he will headline the final Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Nightly Victory Ceremony Concert on February 27th (NBC).

Additionally, TNT joined forces with Usher to feature his song “More” as part of the network’s marketing campaign for 2010 NBA All-Star. TNT filmed an exclusive music video with Usher that will serve as a promotional spot airing in 600 Regal Cinemas beginning Friday, Jan. 29. In addition, the video will be used as part of the network’s campaign to promote its exclusive coverage of 2010 NBA All-Star Game in Dallas, TX on Sunday, Feb. 14.

MTV will exclusively premiere his “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” video, directed by Chris Robinson, tomorrow (Thursday, January 28th) at 6AM EST.
