“Papers” #1 On R&B/Hip Hop Billboard Chart

With its layered harmonies, mellow production and lyrics of heartache, Usher’s “Papers” closely resembles his 2004 No. 1 hit “Burn,” and that’s a very good thing. It’s the first time in a while that the singer sounds energized, as he unleashes deeply personal lyrics about the real-life sacrifices he made for love. “For you I gave my heart and turned my back against the world/’Cause you were my girl,” he sings, a thinly veiled reference to ex-wife Tameka Foster-Raymond. “I done turned into the man that I never thought I’d be/I’m ready to sign them papers.” The overwhelming fan response to “Papers” has provided an early boost in anticipation of Usher’s forthcoming album, “Raymond vs. Raymond,” meaning fans will hopefully hear more breakup laments from the R&B heavyweight soon.”

Usher collects his 10th No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, as “Papers” lifts 2-1. His eighth No. 1 since 2000, the track moves Usher past the chart’s former leaders Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, each with seven, for most No. 1s on the list this decade.

“Papers” is also currently #13 on Hot 100, #23 on Radio Songs, and #10 on Ringtones.

Usher Climbs Despite ‘Poor Taste’ Claim Over Papers

R&B singer Usher continues to rise despite receiving criticism for his decision to release the single “Papers” ahead of an album titled “Raymond Vs. Raymond”.

Named a Top Airplay Gainer for the third consecutive week, Usher’s “Papers” moved another seven spots to reach no.5 on the R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart (12-5) this week.

Also leaping sixty-two spots on the Hot 100 (92-31) and debuting at no.34 on the Digital Songs chart, Usher’s “Papers” continues to move, even the in the wake of recent comments from estranged wife Tameka Raymond.

Raymond, the believed subject of the song, which talks about filing divorce papers (as was done in June of 2009), recently spoke with PEOPLE.

Recognizing the song as entertainment, Raymond told the magazine “It’s entertainment. People shouldn’t take it literally (But) given what we’re going through, it’s in poor taste.”

As previously reported on Singersroom, Usher’s next album, “Raymond Vs. Raymond,” is due for release late 2009.

Rico Love on Raymond vs. Raymond & “Papers”

Usher offered fans a glimpse into his personal life with the art-imitating-life buzz single “Papers.” But if you think that’s the only surprise the R&B crooner has in store, think again. Hitmaker Rico Love, who contributed six songs to Usher’s sixth album Raymond vs. Raymond, currently set for a December release, shared exclusive details with Rap-Up.com about the project.

Usher’s fifth album Here I Stand didn’t resonate with his audience as much as 2004’s multi-platinum Confessions. How does this new album compare to his previous efforts?
It’s going to be amazing. I did six records on the album. I feel like he’s got his mind right and it’s focused. He went through a lot. He had lost his father when he was creating the Here I Stand record, a lot of controversy with his marriage, he had kids, he parted ways with his mother’s management, and there were just a lot of things going on and he kind of lost focus. It’s not like Here I Stand wasn’t a good album. I just feel like he lost touch with his demographic.

What are the titles of the tracks you contributed to the project?
“There Goes My Baby,” “Into the Night,” “Lay You Down,” “Hey Daddy,” and “My Bag” to name a few.

He sang about his divorce on “Papers.” Will the album touch more on his relationship with his ex-wife Tameka Foster?
No, not at all. I think that’s why he put out the “Papers” record to say, “Listen, this is the last time I’ll be talking about it.” I’m sure he’s going to touch on it in a few records, but I don’t want people to think that’s what it’s about because he’s way more classier than that. I can say firsthand that the album is amazing. I’m a part of it. It’s going to be one of those classic Usher albums.

So is “Papers” his official first single?
No, “Papers” is not his first single. It’s his buzz record. Sean Garrett wrote that record. I have the utmost respect for people like Sean Garrett, Ne-Yo, and The-Dream. I really am a fan of what they do and I look up to those guys.

What’s it like working with Usher?
Usher is a genius with recording and will sing songs with such enthusiam and feeling. It’s just genius the way he translates what he’s saying to make it so personal. It’s effortless. I think Usher is my number one favorite artist to record. Mario and Beyoncé will have to be a close second.

“Papers” At Number 17

Not dismissing Usher’s talent but, the Grammy winner’s recent 911 drama and controversy over an ongoing divorce might have aided in scoring Billboard’s greatest airplay gainer title this week.

According to  Billboard, Usher’s new single “Papers” leaped 43 spots from 60-17 on this week’s Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart!

As previously reported “Papers” is the first single to be released from Usher’s forthcoming album “Raymond vs. Raymond”.

Usher’s New Single “Papers” Debuts on Monday

UsherPapers

Usher is airing out his dirty laundry. The R&B superstar will address the end of his marriage on the first offering from his new album, set to debut Monday.

The title of the song, originally reported to be “Filing Papers,” has been confirmed as “Papers” by Jive Records. It was penned by Sean Garrett.

The new single was supposedly written before Usher announced his divorce from Tameka Foster. “Let’s say I wrote a record for Usher three or four months ago where I really didn’t have any idea of what he was going through personally,” Garrett told MTV News in June. “I felt that was the direction we needed to go. I felt that was the question everyone wanted to know: Was [his relationship] good or was it bad? Was it right? Are you happy or not?”

“Papers” will premiere on Monday, October 5, at 2:02 p.m. EST, unless the Internet gets its hands on it earlier. Usher’s sixth studio album Monster is due in December.
