“OMG” Video Inspired By ’80s Sci-Fi Character (MTV News)

For a video as forward thinking as Usher’s “OMG” — with its laser beams and light flashes — director Anthony Mandler actually looked back for inspiration.

“The original idea was kind of Max Headroom,” Mandler told MTV News, citing the animated science-fiction character from ’80s British TV. “That’s where it came from — the TV flickering on and there’s this character. We just wanted to bring it up to date.”

“Max Headroom was always in his room,” he continued, “this unidentifiable room, ’80s shapes. I used that for inspiration.”

The formula worked: “OMG” is among the Best Male Video nominees for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The clip is up against Drake’s “Find Your Love,” Jason Derulo’s “In My Head,” Eminem’s “Not Afraid” and B.o.B.’s “Airplanes.” Mandler is a multiple nominee, having also helmed Drake’s video.

“OMG” is the first time Usher and Mandler — who’s worked with Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, and Rihanna — collaborated on a project.

Usher said he knew the video would be a challenge and wanted to make sure the director was up to the task.

“When I first shot the song to him, I was like, ‘Are you sure you’re gonna be able to catch this one?’ And he said, ‘I got it,’” Usher explained.

“We wanted to bring into my world,” he continued. “Obviously, the international sound and look and feel has already been set, but we wanted to do something theatrical, fun and energetic to show us working off of each other and playing off of each other as artists, but the cinematography would be artistic and incredible.”

Mandler described the visuals as “Hitchcock-ian.” Though the style of the shot was important to the director, he had a simpler goal in mind: to capture Usher in his element. He said the key to the clip was simply letting Usher’s talent take over.

“The concept was to create a world where we put Usher in a space where he does what I think he does better than anyone else in the world, which is perform at a level and magnitude of a superstar and take us, the viewer, whether audible or visually, on a journey, not a ride,” the director said. “And, in that, I wanted to create an unpredictability, so one set leads to another and another, and you never know what’s gonna happen. Along the way, Usher becomes our guide. We’re so focused on him, we don’t notice the change. The thing is unfolding little by little, and you can’t quite see far enough ahead to know what’s gonna come next.”

Justin Bieber Brings Out Usher, Boyz II Men, & Others At MSG Concert

After recovering from an illness this past weekend, Justin Bieber was back at it last night last night for his concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The 16-year-old pop phenom came bearing gifts. MTV reports that things began as they usually have during Bieber’s My World tour, with Jessica Jarrell and Sean Kingston opening.

But along with Bieber’s set came some  surprises. First was veteran R&B group Boyz II Men, who did an a cappella of their “On Bended Knee” with the Biebs. Next came Usher to perform their collaboration off of My World 2.0, “Somebody To Love.” Then fellow teen icon Miley Cyrus took the stage for “Overboard,” followed by Will Smith’s son, Jaden, who sang “Never Say Never.”

Taping for his 2011 3-D biopic, Bieber certainly pulled out all the stops yesterday.

“Usher and the boy Chris Brown going on tour. Y’all know that, right?” Bryan said. “I might have just gave y’all some exclusive sh*t!”!

Unfortunately, that’s all the info he dished on the tour, but we can’t wait to hear more about it.  There’s no word yet on when the tour will start or what cities Usher and Chris might stop in.

Ciara Wants Dance-Off With Usher

Ciara has said that she would like to collaborate on a track with Usher so the pair can have a dance-off in the video.

The singer, whose new album is called Basic Instinct, admitted that she also wants to work with Fergie as well as the R&B superstar on her next record.

She told OK: “If I could work with anyone it would be either Fergie or Usher. I love Fergie, I love her attitude.

“When it comes to Usher, it’d be fun to see us dance together – a dance-off would be really fun. He’s an incredible performer and I really respect what he does.

“I appreciate it and think it would be really fun to do it together.”

Basic Instinct is out on October 5.

Usher Parties At Pier One/Records Duet With Chris Brown

Reggae Sumfest organiser Johnny Gourzong has expressed pleasure at having international R&B star Usher as the headline act on International Night II, Saturday, July 24 and agreed that Usher’s performance would certainly go down as one of the best in the entire 18-year history of Reggae Sumfest.

“Despite the rain, Usher pulled out the crowd on Saturday night … and he is so easy to work with,” the Summerfest director disclosed.

”You know, there are some international acts who are just so difficult to host. They want to leave the island as soon as the show ends; well …not Usher. He stayed on and he has had a great time in Jamaica. He likes ox-tail and jerk chicken and he was just enjoying the island.”

According to Gourzong, Usher and headline act for International Night I, US singer Chris Brown, recorded a song together at a studio in Montego Bay last Saturday and on Sunday, Usher and his friends partied the night away at Pier One in the second city.

“He said he wanted to go somewhere local and we took him to Pier One where he danced up a storm,” Gourzong said, sounding delighted.

“Usher was teaching Robert (Russell) some dance moves and Robert in turn was teaching him some of our moves. I can’t really say how that one worked out,” Gourzong laughed.

“And it was a pleasure having Chris Brown as well. It was great to have them both on stage on Saturday night. That was a first,” Gourzong added.

A tweet on Usher’s Twitter page yesterday, stated: “Incredible weekend in Montego Bay for Reggae Sumfest!”
