Usher & More Stars To Celebrate Quincy Jones
Multi-Grammy-winning music producer Quincy Jones will soon be honored by the likes of Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Usher and other music stars, who will record versions of his hit songs in a new album!
Q: Soul Bossa Nostra, set for release in May or June, will include contemporary versions of Jones’ classic hits performed by Jamie Foxx, LL Cool J, Wyclef Jean, John Legend, Snoop Dogg and others.
Jones will executive produce the album, which will compile songs selected by the artists themselves.
“I am honored that everyone wanted to be a part of this celebration of these songs,” Jones said of the collaboration of the music heavyweights. “They all made them their own, and knocked them out of the park.”
The first single from Q: Soul Bossa Nostra will be available on March 24.

Jermaine Dupri Remakes “Secret Garden”
DALLAS — It’s apparently the season to remake the classics. Mary J. Blige recently recorded a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” and we all know about the remake of “We Are the World.” Now, Jermaine Dupri s spearheading a new version of a classic song, and just like “We Are the World,” it’s another Quincy Jones tune.
JD has called on Usher, Robin Thicke, Tyrese and Trey Songz to cover Jones’ 1989 hit “The Secret Garden (Sweet Seduction Suite).” The original version starred seductive vocalists James Ingram, Al B. Sure, El DeBarge and the incomparable Barry White.
Right before the NBA All-Star Game, Dupri talked about his and his team’s rendition.
“It took a minute for me to even think about touching it,” JD admitted. “It’s a couple of components in that record that you don’t wanna touch — Barry White being one of the main components. I had to leave him [on the song]. There’s nobody out there in the world that’s got a voice like his or even sounded the way he sounded. So I had to make sure I could leave that. It’s gonna be interesting for y’all to hear how these young guys sound mixed in with him.”
In 1989, “Secret Garden” was one of the highlights of Quincy Jones’ Grammy-winning Back on the Block LP. Each vocalist had a verse and an opportunity to sing to the ladies.
“Luckily, it’s a record that hip-hop really embraced as a ballad,” JD said. “It was a record I lived with so much. I kinda felt it was a record that was a part of my life. So it wasn’t that hard for me to get into it. But I just had to figure out all the ways and who to put on the song. I feel that at the time [Quincy] made the record, each one of the guys had a certain thing for the ladies.”
Jermaine said his version will woo the females all over again. “I think Robin Thicke got something for the ladies,” Dupri said. “Usher, definitely. Trey, definitely. And Barry White. That was hard, because I wanted to put Anthony Hamilton on there, Maxwell on there. But it’s hard, because it’s only a four- or five-man [song]. That was the hardest part for me.”
Jermaine said the “Secret Garden” remake will appear on a new Quincy Jones album; no release date has been announced.
“We Are The World” Debuts Tomorrow
The names are different this time around. Lil Wayne, Barbra Streisand, Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers are in the cast; Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan and Cyndi Lauper aren’t. But the purpose of the new “We Are the World” recording remains the same: to harness the music industry’s star power for charity.
The video for the new “We Are the World” — recorded Feb. 1 at the same Hollywood studio where the first “We Are the World” was created, in 1985 — will debut tomorrow during NBC television’s 7:30 p.m.-midnight coverage of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. After that, downloads will be available at World25.org and iTunes.com, with proceeds going to Haitian earthquake relief.
The original “We Are the World” raised more than $63 million for famine relief in Africa. “While the need to assist Africa continues, today the country of Haiti is suffering immeasurably from the destruction due to the recent earthquake and is in immediate need of relief that will last long after the television cameras have left,” said Quincy Jones, who executive-produced the new recording, along with Lionel Richie and Wyclef Jean. “As artists, we have joined together on this 25th anniversary and in the spirit of ‘We Are The World’ to help meet that need.”
Reportedly, the new “We Are the World” will include a segment where some of the late Michael Jackson’s vocals from the original recording are used, along with new vocals by his sister Janet. (Michael Jackson co-wrote the song with Richie.)
The song’s lineup includes Jennifer Hudson, Usher, will.i.am., Kanye West, Celine Dion, Fergie, Mary J. Blige, Rob Thomas, Jamie Foxx, Carlos Santana, Sugarland, Enrique Iglesias, Zac Brown, Tony Bennett, Josh Groban, Brian Wilson, Pink, Musiq Soulchild, Snoop Dogg, Akon, Jordin Sparks and dozens more. For a complete list, visit the song’s official web site, World25.org.
Toni Braxton Eyes Usher Collabo
Toni Braxton has dueted (and locked lips) with Trey Songz already, and now the sexy songstress has her sights set on another one of R&B’s leading men.
The star of the upcoming reality show “Braxton Family Values” is planning a collaboration with Usher for her Atlantic Records debut Pulse. “I think me and Usher are gonna do something together,” she exclusively tells Rap-Up.com. “Usher’s great. He’s like my brother in the business. Love, love, love him! We’re both represented by AEG [Live CEO] Randy Phillips, so Randy’s gonna definitely make it happen.”
Now she’s just waiting for Usher to jump on the record. “I did my part. I called him the Friday before the Super Bowl and said, ‘You have to hear it, Usher.’ He said, ‘I can’t hear it over the phone. After the Super Bowl I’ll hear it.’ We just haven’t connected since Sunday.”
Braxton’s sixth studio album has been pushed back from its original February date because seven out of 10 tracks leaked prior to release. She is adding new material before the rescheduled May 4 date. “It’s top secret now. They won’t even send any of the songs over the Internet. Everything has to be FedExed.”
Pulse boasts production from Lucas Secon (Britney Spears), Harvey Mason Jr. & Oak (Chris Brown), and Troy Taylor (Whitney Houston), as well as collaborations with Robin Thicke and Trey Songz (“Yesterday”).
